Business case

The four areas allow us to establish the technical direction your organisation should take in looking to deliver and manage desktops in the future. The focus of these stages in the Assessment process is very much ‘the what’ associated with your strategy. The purpose of the Business Case then is to establish ‘why’ this move should be made. At Point to Point we spent a great deal of time defining our business case model and based this on our 15+ years of changing the way our customers deliver and manage desktops and apps. The business case service we offer then is based entirely on our experience and IP and looks to establish both the financial and functional case for making this strategic change in direction. The financial model is based on creating an investment model and comparing these to the areas of efficiency that we know we can deliver. In addition, the functional case is an extension of our time with the business and the end user community where we look to define what value we can bring to their daily operations or own strategic projects.

Depending on your stage in the project lifecycle the above stand as activities in their own right and can be delivered in a discrete fashion to support your own internal investigation and processes.

As a result of the Assessment process the following will be presented to your organisation in our final report and findings:

Application Discovery

  • Visibility of applications installed in the business
  • Usage data based on continuous analysis, not last used
  • Statistics pertaining to the current hardware footprint
  • Application usage profiling – resources required on an application basis including concurrent usage

Application Compatibility Testing

  • Red, Amber, Green classification of applications with some intelligent analysis of problem apps
  • Testing against new Windows desktop and Server Operating Systems as well as delivery methods such as XenApp, Terminal Services and App-V
  • Detailed remediation information

User Profiling

  • Discussion and Impact of user behaviour
  • Discussion and Impact of user environment
  • Analysis of user survey

Specific objectives

  • Specific requirements unique to the requirement, for example a focus on the impact of introducing a BYOC scheme

Strategic Recommendations

  • Desktop Virtualisation Landscape – We appreciate that desktop virtualisation is a very complex space and some potential readers of a final report may not be entirely familiar with all the options. We will provide an overview of the technology landscape to broaden the reader’s knowledge.
  • Solution and Design – Technology to be deployed in line with requirements and discovery and justified alignment of conceptual desktop / application delivery approaches to best fit user requirements and business objectives
  • Recommended Vendors – having established the most effective approaches the recommended vendors will be presented in line with this
  • Vendor Justification – discussion of rationale behind our recommendations
  • Licensing – Desktop and Application delivery represents many complexities around licensing, particularly when virtualisation is also included. To try and make sense of this a breakdown of the relevant licensing considerations will be included.
  • Risk Register – Risks and issues that will either cause problems or that could prevent the project from delivering
  • Future Roadmap and Strategic Alignment – how the solution can be introduced/ phased and the way in which this can support the direction of the business
